21.Sankin-kotai Road Geosite

A road utilizing natural topographic features
Used by daimyo on their obligatory travels to the capital, the Bungo Road was built with a keen awareness of topographical features. For instance, it skirts the caldera's wetlands and utilizes local rocks for the stone paths that run along the caldera walls.
Sankin-kotai Road
This section of the Bungo Road runs from Kumamoto Castle to Oita. Paved with rocks including volcanic ignimbrite, the excellent road was used during the Edo period.
