Understand unusual formations
Around the southwestern region of Aso's outer rim, interesting formations of eroded and collapsed tuff breccia dot the landscape. Near Mt. Kanmurigatake visitors can observe and even collect chunks of andesite containing large pyroxene and amphibole crystals.
Unusual Rock Formations at Mt. Rakanyama
Unusual rock formations dot the ridges of the southwestern portion of the caldera, which is formed from pre-Aso Volcano rock. Including natural bridges and towers, these formations are made primarily of pyroclastic andesite.
