32.Soyokyo Gorge Geosite
A beautiful valley created by a volcano and springs
This gorge runs through a plateau linking the southeastern side of the caldera to the outer rim at an elevation of 550 m. The Gokase River flows along the bottom of the gorge for approximately 15 km. Measuring 200-300 m across, the gorge's precipitous walls are formed from Aso pyroclastic flow deposits (ignimbrite) reaching 200 m into the air.
Soyokyo Gorge
Carved out by pyroclastic flow from Aso Volcano, this stunning gorge offers a chance to observe columnar joints up close at Funanokuchi Spring.
