阿蘇山西巌殿寺観音まつりのご案内です！

麓坊中、ＪＲ阿蘇駅から東登山道で阿蘇山上へ登る途中には、726年にインドから渡来した『最栄読師』が聖武天皇の勅願により開山されたといわれる『阿蘇山西巌殿寺』が厳かに佇んでいます。
（＊1871年、山上の旧堂がこの麓坊中に移されました。）
古くから阿蘇山修験道の拠点であり、また九州では天台宗の最高位の寺格として知られています。
明治時代の住職の命日にちなんだ観音祭は、県の内外から多くの修験道の行者、信者が集まり、日本でも有名な『火渡り』や『湯立て』などの荒行が執り行われ、一般参拝者も一年の無病息災を願い大変な賑わいとなります。みなさまもぜひお越しください！

Kan’non Festival at Asosan Saigandenji Temple

Asosan Saigandenji Temple is said to be founded by Saiei on the west of Nakadake crater in 726 and moved to Fumotobochyu area, on the East mountain road up to Mt.Aso from JR Aso station in 1871.
The temple has been the centre of mountain religion and the most prestigious Tendai temple in Kyushu.
At Kan’non festival, many worshippers gather and practice religious austerities such as firewalking (Hiwatari) and soaking bamboo grass in boiling water and sprinkling the water on worshippers (Yudate). Not only the practitioners, but also the locals come together to pray for good health.
